An Australian Muslim cleric whose passport was confiscated when he tried to enter Jordan has not yet asked for diplomatic help, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade says. Sheik Ismail Al-Wahwah lives in Sydney and was heading to Amman to visit family. "We are aware of media reports that an Australian has had his passport confiscated upon arrival in Jordan last week," a department spokeswoman told AAP on Monday. "The Australian embassy in Amman has not received any requests for assistance."
Sheik Al-Wahwah, an Australian citizen, has a long and growing list of border dramas to his name with the incident at Amman International Airport the latest. Hardline group Hizb ut-Tahrir is outraged by the news. "The Jordanian intelligence services have demonstrated with this action, once again, the well-known reality that in the 'Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan' the state is little more than the intelligence service and the intelligence service is the state," spokesman Uthman Badar said in a statement. 15th November 2011 Source: Nine MSN |
