Six Hizb ut-Tahrir activists detained in Kyrgyzstan

Bishkek, February 26, Interfax - Kyrgyzstan's special services have detained five activists of the outlawed Hizb ut-Tahrir organization in the Issyk-Kul region in the north of the country, a spokesman for the Kyrgyz State National Security Service said on Friday.

"Five citizens of Kyrgyzstan were functionaries of this banned organization active in the Tyup District of the Issyk-Kul region," the spokesman said.

"A large number of copies of extremist literature were confiscated from them," he said.

One more Hizb ut-Tahrir activist was detained in the city of Osh in the south of Kyrgyzstan, the spokesman said.

"Materials promoting extremism were confiscated from him," he said.

"Criminal cases have been opened against the detained persons and an investigation is underway," he said.
