Security Concerns Suspected as Obama Scraps Visit to Central Java, Borobudur

US President Barack Obama’s cancelled trip to Central Java and Yogyakarta was a major blow to the provinces’ tourism industries, a public relations expert said over the weekend.

Deddy Pranowo Eryono, head of the Yogyakarta Public Relations Body and secretary of the local branch of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (IHRA), believed the reversal was related to security concerns.

This is a very huge hit because tourism in these provinces is still considered unsafe by foreign tourists,” Dedy said.

5,000 Hizbut Tahrir supporters to stage anti-Obama rally in Surabaya

Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia said Sunday it would deploy 5,000 supporters to stage a rally against the visit of US President Barrack Obama to Indonesia later this month.

The protest will be held in front of the U.S. consulate general on Jl. Dokter Soetomo, Surabaya.

East Java HTI chairman Khoiri Sulaiman said his organization hoped that the government would not to accept Obama visit.

Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) Java Reject Obama Arrival
News - Hizb ut-Tahrir
Surabaya - Members of Clerical in East Java, which incorporated in Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) agreed to reject the arrival of U.S. President that the 44 to Indonesia. Acts of resistance as a form of protest against the U.S. actions are persecuting Muslims around the world.

"We agreed to reject Obama coming to Indonesia as a form of our solidarity to our brothers who are suffering due to U.S. power and cronies," said Khoiri Sulaiman, as chairman of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) of East Java, on journalists, Sunday (7 / 3).

Inaccurate and misleading reports on HTI

Frankly, this is not the first time The Jakarta Post has published misinformation regarding Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI). A number of news reports have been clearly inaccurate and misleading. Such reports do not do justice to local or international readers in providing the balanced points of view they deserve to make up their own minds about HTI.

For instance, on Feb. 2, 2010 the Post reported that the National Alliance for the Freedom of Religion and Faith (AKKBB) sought a judicial review of the blasphemy law (Law No. 1/PNPS/1965) by the Constitutional Court. The Post wrote “Militant groups ready to defend controversial law”. The article went on to say:

The Islamic Defenders Front (FPI) and Hizbut Tahrir Indonesia (HTI) said they would defend the controversial blasphemy law, calling the move to scrap the 45-year-old law an attempt to ‘liberalize’ and destroy Islam. The two radical groups have met with Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali to lend their support to the government to fight against the plan of human rights groups to have the law reviewed by the Constitutional Court.
