Indonesian Islamists protest Obama visit

JAKARTA, Indonesia — Members of a hardline Muslim group have protested outside the U.S. Embassy against President Barack Obama’s upcoming visit to Indonesia.

More than 1,000 members of Hizbut Tahrir rallied outside the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta on Sunday. One of the banners and posters on display read: “Reject Obama, reject capitalism and imperialism.”

Another protest of about 800 people was held in Indonesia’s second-largest city of Surabaya.

Australian's passport seized in Jordan

Jordanian authorities have confiscated the passport of an Australian citizen who is a member of a Muslim group that advocates a global Islamic caliphate.

Ismail al-Wahwah, from Bankstown, is a member of the global organisation Hizb ut-Tahrir (Liberation Party).

His passport was confiscated on Thursday when he arrived at Amman airport.

He had been on the Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia and had returned to Jordan to visit family before returning to Australia.

Islamist groups denounce Syrian government

TRIPOLI, Lebanon: Several hundred supporters of Hizb Ut-Tahrir and the Sahwa (Awakening) Party held separate demonstrations in Tripoli after Friday prayers to denounce the Syrian government and voice support for Syrian protesters demanding the ouster of President Bashar Assad.

Following an interruption of several weeks, Hizb Ut-Tahrir resumed its demonstrations in support of anti-regime Syrian protesters. Supporters marched after Friday prayers from the Tinal Mosque to the Tal neighborhood in downtown Tripoli, waving banners and carrying placards supporting the seven-month-old uprising.

Jewish community wants Islamic group Hizb ut-Tahrir outlawed

VICTORIA'S Jewish community wants a radical Islamic group banned, claiming it poses a security risk.

Hizb ut-Tahrir, which is banned in several countries, is due to hold a conference against the Afghanistan war in Melbourne tonight.

The group's Australian branch has also recently criticised a new counter-terrorism website launched by the Federal Government.

Victorian Jewish Community Council president John Searle said yesterday that Hizb ut-Tahrir's beliefs were contrary to those of most Australians.

Govt launches anti-terror website

A new federal government website designed to counter terrorism has been launched by federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland.

The Resilient Communities site is an online portal to a range of government resources designed to build what Mr McClelland has long described as "resilience" to radicalism and the possibility of a terrorist attack on home soil.

"We know that to effectively challenge violent extremism, community leadership is essential and needs to be driven by local knowledge and experience," he said in a statement on Friday.
