The Federal election looms and as usual come election time politicians from all parties seek to court the Muslim vote. The Muslims are told that they must vote and be engaged in the political process in order to secure their interests.
Islam certainly demands that Muslims be politically active, but through means and for ends defined by Islam. These are a far cry from the means and objectives of the secular political process. Islam has its own unique form of political activism which manifests as a regular, principled and concerted effort for truth and justice, as opposed to filling out a ballet paper once every three years, and that with narrow, selfish aims in mind!
Democracy is in crisis, indicated by increasing public apathy with regard the political process. People increasingly come to realise that democracy, despite the glorified rhetoric, only serve the interests of the economic elite. Unprincipled politics along party lines has become the norm for political leaders in Australia, as much as the US and UK. Calls for Muslims to get engaged are thus in reality calls to depoliticise the Muslims by making them merely another spoke within a failed system.
Join us in this public lecture as we discuss the Islamic view on political participation in a secular political system as well as the political realities which demonstrate that political activism on the basis of Islam is the real way forward.
