A cache of home-made bombs has been detonated by police after being found in the backyard of a suburban Sydney house occupied by a couple and their two-year-old child.
Up to nine soft drink containers packed with explosives were discovered on Tuesday at a luxury home in Clontarf, in Sydney's north. "Yesterday afternoon, police were called to a home in Clontarf after the discovery of suspicious items," a NSW Police spokeswoman said on Wednesday. "Police attended and those items were removed from the area." She said inquiries were continuing into the discovery, but had no further information. The bombs were found in a small blue esky and each had the explosive equivalent of three hand grenades, Network Ten reported. The couple and their child were evacuated from the home while bomb squad officers removed the devices. It is not thought the couple were the intended target for the bombs. Police also evacuated neighbours while removing the bombs. "The reason they gave me was they were bringing them down to put them into a container and if one of them accidentally went off I have very large windows in my house and it could shatter the windows," neighbour Sylvia Brook told Ten. The bombs were forensically tested and detonated in a controlled explosion at Anzac Rifle Range in Malabar, in Sydney's east on Wednesday. Source: SBS
